Claude Frontier Academy (benchmark)
Anthropic’s program, announced Oct 2026, to train “Frontier Deployed Engineers”. We’re using it as inspiration for Certification and Assessment Design.
What they did
- Commitment: $100M to train 10,000 engineers by end of 2027
- Audience: Experienced engineers who have already built with LLMs. Places are by nomination from their employer, and each nominee brings a real project.
- Model: A residency, like medical training: learn from practitioners → work realistic cases → get assessed → work alone
- Stage 1: A multi-day in-person course, taught by Anthropic staff and licensed trainers, built around a mock company rollout (use-case selection → security review → handover). It ends in a graded practical and earns the Claude Resident Engineer badge.
- Stage 2: 12 weeks leading a real deployment at the engineer’s own company, with Anthropic support. A second assessment then earns the Frontier Deployed Engineer badge.
- First cohorts: Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey, Capgemini, Novo Nordisk, Morgan Stanley and Commonwealth Bank of Australia; cohorts are running in London, SF and NYC
- Separate track: Pearson-proctored role exams (Associate, Developer, Architect) count toward partner-tier status. The top tier requires 1,000 certified practitioners, 100 customers and 15 public references.
What we should borrow
- In-person, practitioner-taught, no multiple-choice exam
- Two-stage credential: workshop + graded practical → real deployment → full designation (^q-018)
- Nomination + bring-a-project eligibility (^q-019)
- Mock company rollout as the workshop spine → Capstone scenario
- Firm-level tiers tied to the number of certified people + deployments (^q-017)
Where we differ
- Microsoft multi-product stack (Copilot + Foundry + Fabric), not a single model
- HVE gives us a named, open method to certify against
- Frontier is the delivery partner, not the vendor itself
